Officers reported they were notified by a individual who found a automobile in Hanau marked with reddish fluid

Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for information.

An important representative said the attack left him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
